GERTIE

Her joy at being out of her kennel was so genuine and entertaining that we forgot why we were calling her Mama. During our walk, she thoroughly enjoyed exploring the sights and smells of the new grass sprouts. She often darted across our path, unbothered by whether we were prepared for it or not.

Jodi and I took her out again a week later, just before a hailstorm hit. It seems to always hail when we are in New Martinsville, and I'm not sure what to make of it. Perhaps it's a good sign. I remembered that I had been told she might be the mother of a group of dogs that had recently come to the shelter, including Pansy, Gilligan, and Violet—although Violet does resemble Glinda. Regardless, our main goal is to help these dogs find loving homes.

Gertie handled the hail remarkably well. We sheltered in a nearby barn, and while she looked a bit worried, she took comfort in knowing we were there for her. Once the sun came out again, she was eager to return to the path to continue exploring her new surroundings and stretch her legs.

Gertie is a pretty good sized hound mix with an infectious zest for life. She is strong, happy and very friendly.
