A lovely little Bichon/poodle mix recently found her way into our rescue. Evie is approximately 5-6 years old, weighs 11 lbs and was a puppy mill mom.
Evie was very frightened when she first arrived. She couldn’t settle and ran around the house for hours in the evening barking and howling. We were advised by the vet to give her some medication for stress and she now sleeps through the night. She sleeps in a dog bed on the floor.
She has not been walked on a leash and does not do stairs. She is skittish and avoid still but her foster mom is able to get her when medication is required. She is not a biter.
Evie has a good appetite. She recently had 19 teeth removed during her dental. She eats mostly soft food – Royal Canin Adult canned food. We add a little chopped chicken and rice. She loves Benny Bully treats. Evie was recently spayed.
When we take Evie for car rides we put her in a crate. She is quiet and appears to be overwhelmed but does settle, she has been car sick a few times.
Evie seems most comfortable with other dogs. She is in a foster home with 3 small dogs and gets along well with all of them. She is not much of a barker, but will join in if they are barking. Evie is housebroken and is very good about using puppy pads.
Evie would probably do best in a very quiet environment with no children. Preferably she should go into a home with a retiree or someone who works from home and could be with her most of the time.
There are challenges with puppy mill dogs, but with time and patience they can become lovely pets. Little by little Evie is making progress and with the right home life can only get better!
