DeJean is an incredibly sweet puppy that came to Safe Haven on a transport from an over-crowded shelter in Texas. He was one of 10 puppies that were found in a dumpster near Amarillo, Texas at the end of January right around Super Bowl Sunday, so several of the pups received "football" themed names! This guy just happens to be named after our very own Cooper DeJean that used to volunteer at Safe Haven when he played for the Hawkeyes! He had an absolutely amazing Super Bowl in his rookie season with the Eagles - so it only made sense that one of the puppies was named in his honor! While two of the 10 puppies found homes through the shelter in Texas, the other eight were at risk of euthanasia and a desperate plea was sent out for other shelters in Iowa to help. Luckily several agreed to take on the remaining puppies, with Safe Haven taking in four. DeJean is guessed to be a 3 to 4 month old Lab mix, and will likely mature into nice medium to large sized dog. A volunteer did donate and submit a DNA test on one of the other puppies in the litter - and the results showed that the puppies are basically 45% Border Collie, 30% Labroador Retriever, 20% German Shepherd and 5% Australian Kelpie.
The ideal adoptive family will be committed to taking a puppy obedience class right away to get started on the right foot - they will need a family that can commit to continue proper socialization and also all the work that goes into house-training a puppy, which requires a lot of patience and persistence with working on a schedule. Puppies need to be taken outside frequently - as often as every 4 hours in the beginning. So an ideal home for these puppies will be one where they won't have long periods of time during the day spent alone during the first few months, so they can have the best chance of successful housetraining and have years of wonderful love and devotion to focus on!
